How It Works

The Mechanism

No sucking required, no cup to hold, just one switch press.

The Neater Powered Drinker uses a peristaltic pump to deliver a precise, controlled measure of liquid through a flexible straw directly to the user's mouth. The user initiates each delivery with a single switch press. The system then pauses automatically to allow safe swallowing before the next cycle can be triggered.

The device’s priming function pre‑loads the drinking pathway, ensuring immediate, reliable fluid delivery while reducing caregiver‑assisted drinking by supporting more independent, timely hydration.

The defining feature of a peristaltic pump is that liquid never contacts any mechanical part of the device. The fluid travels only through food-grade tubing, which is removed and cleaned separately. The pump mechanism itself stays dry, clean, and fully protected.

Steadi-3 Plus Mechanism

Clinical Rationale

Addressing the drinking challenges that standard aids cannot.

Conventional drinking aids like cups, straws, adapted vessels, etc, tend to rely on the ability to grip and lift, and the ability to generate enough oral suction to draw liquid up a straw. The Neater Powered Drinker removes both requirements entirely.

Poor lip closure

Users who cannot form an adequate seal around a straw can drink independently with the Powered Drinker. The pump delivers the fluid; no suction is needed.

Inability to suck

Where respiratory or bulbar muscle weakness prevents effective sucking the powered delivery mechanism substitutes completely for that function.

Upper limb absence or weakness

Users who cannot lift, grip, or angle a cup or bottle can access hydration through a hands-free straw positioned by the adjustable bendy-arm holder. The switch can be operated by hand, foot, elbow, or head.

Reducing caregiver-assisted drinking

Where drinking requires staff assistance, the Powered Drinker can restore the user's ability to self-hydrate between scheduled care visits.

Use Cases & Settings

Where it makes a difference

A drink when they want, at their pace, and under their control.

At home

Self-initiated drinking throughout the day, without waiting for caregiver availability.

Residential & care settings

Reduces staff calls and supports resident autonomy between scheduled care rounds. Compatible with bedside tray positioning.

During meals

Used alongside the Neater Eater Robotic Feeder, the Powered Drinker completes a fully independent mealtime without assistance.

In rehabilitation settings

Supports early restoration of independent hydration post-injury or post-stroke, contributing to discharge planning goals.

On the move

Battery typically requires charging only once a week. Compact enough to travel with the user to appointments, outings, and stays away from home.

Designed for Safety

Pump includes built-in swallow delay control, allowing users to swallow at their own pace rather than worrying about keeping up with the device. The peristaltic pump is also designed so that no moving parts touch the liquid, simplifying cleaning and improving the device's safety.

Adapts to patient needs

Adjustable pumping volume ensures that the amount of pumped liquid in each cycle is suitable for the user and can be easily switched between several pre-programmed volumes. Any switch with a standard 3.5 mm jack can be used to control the device; fitting patient needs regardless of the situation.

Convenience is Key

Easy-read display shows current program number and indicates when charging is needed. Extra-long 31" flexible straw tube, suitable for liquid and thickened drinks, can be positioned easily with the bendy arm straw holder for easy user access.

Warranty

Neater Powered Drinker comes with a 3-year warranty as standard to cover manufaturing defects. Warranty includes: The main mechanical and electrical components to be repaired or replaced at the discretion of the manufacturer. The warranty does not cover: malfunctions from incorrect usage, tampering, attachments (switches, straws), repairs not coverred by warranty, refurbishment programmes. Warranty begins from date of product shipping.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Neater Powered Drinker (NPD) is designed for individuals who cannot effectively drink from a conventional cup or straw due to impaired oral motor control, weak suction, reduced lip closure, or upper-extremity disability. The system can also deliver puréed foods and thickened fluids when clinically appropriate.

Typical clinical populations include:

  • ALS / Motor Neuron Disease
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Stroke
  • Severe upper-limb weakness

Clinically appropriate users generally demonstrate:

  • Adequate swallowing safety
  • Sufficient cognition for switch activation
  • Ability to coordinate swallowing with fluid delivery
  • Stable seating and head positioning

The Powered Drinker enables users to control fluid intake independently through switch activation. A programmable peristaltic pump delivers measured amounts of liquid through flexible tubing directly to the mouth.

Clinical benefits commonly reported include:

  • Improved hydration
  • Increased independence
  • Reduced caregiver assistance
  • Improved dignity and autonomy
  • Better participation in social activities
  • Adjustable drink volume settings
  • Automatic pause time between sips
  • Programmable flow timing
  • Compatibility with various switches

The Powered Drinker was specifically engineered to support high standards of hygiene and clinical safety. The liquid remains entirely inside food-grade tubing and never contacts the pump mechanism itself. The “clean-pump” design minimizes internal contamination risk and simplifies reprocessing for repeated clinical or home use.

To clean the Neater Powered Drinker, remove the drinking tube and container after each use and wash them with warm soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and allow all parts to air dry before reassembling. The tubing should be checked regularly for wear or discoloration and replaced as needed. Always keep liquids out of the pump unit itself and wipe the exterior with a damp cloth only.
